New Zealand Spinach Seeds

New Zealand Spinach Seeds. (Tetragonia tetregonioides)  Although used like spinach, New Zealand Spinach is not a true spinach and is actually considered herbs or small shrubs. It is a perennial native to New Zealand and has naturalized from cultivation in many warm, subtropical regions mostly of the Southern Hemisphere.  New Zealand Spinach now can be found growing wild and are cultivated in New Zealand, Australia, Southern Africa and South America. Also found in Japan, China and Taiwan.  Although New Zealand Spinach is a perennial it is usually cultivated as an annual for it's leafy greens.  If you live where winters are mild you can grow this as a short lived perennial. Unlike true spinach New Zealand Spinach doesn't tolerate freezing temperatures. New Zealand Spinach is a summer crop because it tolerates heat better than most other greens.  New Zealand Spinach is a perfect greens choice for home gardens.  A few New Zealand Spinach plants are all that are needed for a regular supply of greens.  I would similize the growth habit of the plant to that of Basil.  New Zealand Spinach grows as a strong stem with leaves around it.  New Zealand Spinach grows 1 to 2 feet tall.  When you harvest the leaves they grow back.  Because of New Zealand Spinach growth habit it is commonly called Everbearing Spinach, Everlasting Spinach, or Perpetual Spinach.  It is also called Tetragonia, Ice Plant and Della Nuova Zelanda.  New Zealand spinach is easy to grow, high yielding and very nutritious.  New Zealand Spinach is drought resistant and hardly affected by pests and diseases.  The succulent leaves are similar to spinach, but without any bitterness.  The thick leaves of New Zealand Spinach are a very good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Riboflavin and Vitamin B6.  Packet contains approximately 100 seeds grown naturally with love and care.  Happy planting!!  Suggested days until harvest is 60 days.  These are slower to germinate than true Spinach, (which comes up for us in about 3 days).  Our New Zealand Spinach germinates for us in less than a week, (other resourses suggest it takes 14 - 21 days for germination).  By 21 days we are harvesting young leaves for salads.  The picture is of a harvest at 35 days.  Soaking of seeds overnight is suggested, but again we don't do this, as we haven't found it necessary.  We have a wide variety of Heirloom Vegetable, Herb, and Flower Seeds for sale. With all of our seeds: Your first packet ships for $2.50. All additional packets ship free. So your total shipping on a seed order is $2.50 no matter how many packets you order.
