Broad Windsor Fava Bean Seeds. This heirloom plant is very cold hardy and can be sown 4 to 6 weeks before average last frost. Broad Windsor Fava Beans can even be planted in late fall for spring harvest if you live where you have a mild winter climate. If you live in a hotter climate avoid planting in the hottest months, and plant in areas that receive some shade. With a little shade provided, they grow well here, where summer temperatures easily reach 90 - 100 degrees. The upright plants grow 36 to 48 inches tall. The plants produce 5" to 8" long pods that are filled with 5 - 7 seeds. Pick pods at 2-3" to eat like snap beans or use as a shell bean. Fava beans are said to be one of the oldest cultivated plants. They were eaten in ancient Greece and Rome. As with most beans they can be used fresh, canned or dried for later use.  Fava beans should be shelled and peeled before eating. The outer peel on the beans, is technically edible, but is rough in texture.    Fava beans have a distinct flavor and buttery, creamy texture that makes them a great addition to a wide variety of dishes. The young leaves of the plant can also be eaten either raw or cooked like spinach.  75 days until full maturity.  Packet contains approximately 25 seeds - grown naturally with love and care grown naturally with love and care.  Happy Planting!  We find that Sunflowers are a great companion plant to provide shade for plants that need it.  If you have never tried Fava Beans before or if you taking medication:  Before introducing any new food to your body you should be aware of health risks and benefits of the food.  Broad beans are rich in tyramine, and should be avoided by those taking monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors.
