When started from seed, Onion plants have a grouping of hollow, green leaves. Bulbing onions are day-length sensitive. As the day length reaches a specific minimum length the base or bulb of the plant begins to swell creating what you havest as the onion. So, short day onions start to develop earlier in the year when the days are shorter. Long day onions require more hours of sunlight before they bulb. All seed come to you in packets with basic growing instructions on the back. We grow, harvest, and handle all our seeds ourselves.
