The flavor of home grown heirloom watermelon can't be beet.  Plant seeds 1/2" - 1" deep. Watermelon seeds can started indoors, germinate at 75 - 80 F. Unless you are skilled in the art of transplanting it is best to start this type of plant in peat pots as to not damage the stems when handling them. Transplant your heirloom watermelon plants outdoors after they have 3 true leaves. To plant your watermelon we suggest you make mounds 18" - 24" apart and put the plants in the center of the mound. A watermelon is ripe when the stem curls and turns brown, when the bottom of the melon the is resting on the ground turns yellow and when you tap the melon you hear a thud as if it were hollow.
