Turnip strive in cooler temperatures, not in the heat of summer. Plant your heirloom turnip seeds 1/4" deep and 1 to 3 inches apart. As long as you use this proper spacing, turnips can be planted in single rows in in a block.If you plan on harvesting large turnips, thin to 4 - 6 inch spacing, using the thinned plants as baby turnips. When you harvest your turnip roots for storage, you want them to be 2" - 4" across, baby turnips don't keep as well as turnips this size. Heirloom Turnip is a root vegetable that is are grown for their bulbous taproot and tops or greens. The root of the turnip can be boiled or steamed, mashed or pureed, sautéed or stewed. Turnip greens can be prepared by boiling, steaming, sauteing or incorporating into dishes. The flavor of turnip greens is said to resemble mustard greens.
