Melons are believed to have originated in Southeast Asia and Africa but have long since been grown throughout the world.  Early settlers grew melons here in North American. Over the years, many Native American Tribes including Navajo and Isleta have developed melons with their own characteristics with selective seed saving. Besides being a refreshingly delicious fruit, Heirloom Melons are good for you.  melons contain lycopene, an antioxidant found in some fruits and vegetables that have incredible health benefits. Plant seeds 1/2" deep. Melon seeds can started indoors, and will germinate at around 70 F.  Unless you are skilled in the art of transplanting it is best to start this type of plant in peat pots as to not damage the stems when handling them. Transplant your heirloom melon plants outdoors after they have there first true leaves. To plant your melon we suggest you make mounds 18" - 24" apart and put the plants in the center of the mound. A melon is ripe when the skin color changes and the fruit can easily be pulled from the stem and when you tap the melon you hear a thud as if it were hollow. All seed come to you in paper packets with basic growing instructions on the back. We grow, harvest and handle all our seeds ourselves.
