Plant seeds 1/2" deep. Melon seeds can started indoors, and will germinate at around 70 F.  Unless you are skilled in the art of transplanting it is best to start this type of plant in peat pots as to not damage the stems when handling them. Transplant your heirloom melon plants outdoors after they have there first true leaves. To plant your melon we suggest you make mounds 18" - 24" apart and put the plants in the center of the mound.
